Save Big on Water Bills and Make Your Business Water Sustainable!
In 2025, a lot more businesses are going to be looking at how they can save money on their utilities and the newest issue they are facing is their water bills.
Domestically we’re being warned that our water bills are on the way up, but for business, they already know all about it! It’s nothing new to them and it’s only going to get worse for businesses.
Looking at some indicative wholesale prices, we’re talking about Southern Water increases for water of 20-30 percent and the same for wastewater.
Other water companies are following suit, and this is to give them the available funds over the next five years to be able to fix the leaks, update the infrastructure and build more infrastructure to carry the increased amount of wastewater that’s being delivered from customers.
We’ve been assured by the regulator Ofwat, that the increases aren’t going to be diverted to shareholder dividends and there’s going to be a mechanism in place to ring-fence a lot of this revenue.
Hopefully it will be put to good use.
Infrastructure repairs look to be costing a huge amount, up to £100 billion.
That sounds like a lot of money but it isn’t really in utilities terms.
You can expect a lot more excavations in the street and leaks being fixed.
The water companies are now going around doing more and more water leak investigations for commercial properties, so they’ll be serving notices on those customers where they think there’s leaks.
There’s a lot going on.
We’re using more and more water.
Some would say we waste an awful lot of water, which we do.
We use it inefficiently.
Do we value water?
Some of us do, some of us don’t.
The only time we value something is when it costs us a lot of money!
I liken that to the energy price increases where we’re a lot more careful about the energy we use now both in business and in our homes.
We’re probably looking at increases of 70 to 80 percent which is a huge increase for business.
If you’re spending £100,000 in water now, it’s going to be £180,000 in five years time. That has to make everyone focus on sustainability now.
We have to be smarter and more savvy when it comes to water. You can’t reduce the bills until you’ve got the data.
You need actual flow data, just as with energy.
So, there are now smart meter rollouts by the wholesale water companies, and they’re replacing all the old meters.
Anything that’s 10 years and older is being replaced by a smart meter that will send data via the phone networks to the wholesalers database and then the retailers will be able to have access to that data to bill their business customers.
There’s going to be huge leakage identified across the board. It will stimulate the market like there’s no tomorrow and we’re going to see a huge increase in business interest.
Once they start getting these smart meters rolled out to businesses, and businesses start to see what they’re using on a daily and overnight basis then they’ll be able to focus in and start driving down those costs which is fantastic for the environment but fantastic for business as well.
Smart water networks are a thing of the future but it’s happening right now. In a sense we ARE getting smarter, making use of the tech.
The water industry is way behind the energy market at the minute but it’s rapidly catching up, which is great news for us and great news for customers.
