Bristol Water Launches New Education Portal
In a first for a utility company, Bristol Water has launched its own education portal, designed as a resource for students in KS2 and above to inform them on all issues relating to water and the environment.
The Bristol Water Foundation is made up of two parts – a learning hub where you can find anything water-related, mapped to the national curriculum, and a careers hub for students in year 10 up to university age. This provides a summary of all the opportunities with Bristol Water, as well as sharing ways to get ahead in your career, tips on CV writing and so on. The portal has been designed throughout the various lockdowns and features more than 40 colourful experiments, worksheets and more.
The supplier has also pledged to collaborate with over 30 local organisations this year to help young people ready themselves for the world of work. And it has set up a special mentoring scheme to benefit people from underrepresented backgrounds. Professor of watery education at Bristol Water Sharna Smith explained that, during Lockdown 1, the company had started thinking about how to make home schooling more fun, saying that it had worked with real teachers, students, subject experts and graphic designers to build the portal.
“And this is just the start. Many of us don’t know where water comes from or why we should be saving it. Often people think we just drop some chlorine and away it goes. But the reality is there’s a mind-blowing amount in cleaning and distributing water at the turn of a tap, whenever you need it.
“We’d encourage you all to try a navy shower which emulates what navy sergeants did at sea to save the limited water on the ship! It involves turning the shower off while you shampoo and clean,” she went on to say.
If that doesn’t appeal, rest assured that there are plenty of other ways in which you can save water, as both a business and an individual. One of the most effective ways to reduce your usage and consumption is, in fact, to switch business water suppliers, something you have been able to do in England since 2017.
By switching, you can have a site audit carried out, which will reveal any issues across your entire site, such as hidden leaks in dire need of repair. Leakage is one of the main ways that a business wastes water so addressing this can make a huge difference to both the environment and your back pocket.
Other benefits of switching include cost savings through better tariffs with a different retailer, better customer service and being able to take advantage of working with a supplier with experience of your particular industry or niche.
