Up until April 2017, companies had to make do with what they were given but since the English retail water market was deregulated, you’ve had the freedom to choose your own, reaping all sorts of positive benefits as a result.

But because the market is so new and because you’re unlikely to have considered switching business water suppliers before, it can be quite confusing and even overwhelming, with no idea where to begin the process.

The first step you need to take is working out your water usage, looking at your bills to find out just how much water you use and how much you pay for it. Make a note of your annual water usage, your current payment method, your bills and charges information, and your service supply point identification number (SPID).

Once you have all this information, you can then take a look at your current deal to see if your supplier is meeting the needs of your business. You’re able to switch your water supply and/or wastewater removal, but don’t forget that you can talk to your current supplier to see if they can improve the contract you’re already on before you switch.

There are all sorts of benefits associated with switching, but the main reason you may likely decide to move supplier is realising cost savings through better tariffs with a different water retailer. You may also find that you enjoy better service levels, including improved customer services, more accurate billing and more timely responses to enquiries.

By switching, you’re also able to consolidate some or all of your water supply across multiple sites and regions, which can make running your operations a lot more efficient. You could even reduce your water bills by between 5 percent and 10 pecent in England and up to around 18 percent in Scotland, so there are many benefits to be had from looking into moving to a different water supplier.

In order to be eligible to switch, you need to have at least one site operating in either England or Scotland, but there are so many retailers to approach that it can be hard to find what you’re looking for.
